Papaya
for Weightloss
The papaya, a previously exotic and rare fruit, is now readily available
at most times of the year.
Papayas grow in tropical climates and are also known as papaws or pawpaws.
Their sweet taste, vibrant color and wide variety of health benefits are just a
few reasons to add them to your diet.
The papaya fruit is very low in calories (just 39 calories/100 g) and
contains no cholesterol; however, it is a rich source of phyto-nutrients,
minerals, and vitamins.
Papayas contain soft, easily digestible flesh with a good amount of
soluble dietary fiber that helps to have normal bowel movements; thereby
reducing constipation problems.
It is also an excellent source of Vitamin-A (provides 1094 IU/100
g) and flavonoids like ß-carotene, lutein, zea-xanthin and cryptoxanthin.
Vitamin A is required for maintaining healthy mucus membranes and skin and is
essential for healthy vision. These compounds are known to have antioxidant
properties; help act as protective scavengers against oxygen-derived free
radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that play a role in aging and
various disease processes. Consumption of natural fruits rich in carotenes has
known to protect the body from lung and oral cavity cancers.
Papaya fruit is also rich in many essential B-complex vitamins such as
Folic acid, pyridoxine (vitamin B-6), riboflavin, and thiamin (vitamin B-1).
These vitamins are essential in the sense that body requires them from external
sources to replenish and play a vital role in metabolism.

Enzymes and Weight Loss
Losing extra body weight is possible by means of limiting calorie intake
or burning more and more calories. The digestive enzymes present in papaya can
prevent the storage of food in our body as fat cells and provide sufficient
energy to fuel our daily activities so that we can burn up the added fat in an
efficient manner.
- Papain – Major Papaya Enzyme
Papain is the most crucial enzyme found in papaya. It is actually a cysteine
protease (proteolytic enzyme) which, in spite of being formed inside the
digestive tract, can work similar to the natural digestive enzyme pepsin
(generated in pancreas). Papain is highly effective in breaking apart the
peptide bonds of large complex protein molecules and forming comparatively
smaller as well as readily soluble individual peptones or amino acids. The
enzyme mostly works on meat protein and other similar proteins like wheat
protein (gluten), milk protein (casein), etc. It accelerates the whole
procedure of digestion, which is very much necessary for successful weight
loss.
- Other Papaya Enzymes
Apart from papain, papaya also contains a number of other potent
digestive enzymes, such as chymopapain, alpha-amylase, caricain, glycyl endopeptidase,
and so on. These are also quite effective in digesting meat and other
concentrated forms of protein. Moreover, these enzymes can break down
carbohydrates, starches and fats along with proteins and digest them with equal
efficiency. In short, they can aid in our natural digestive process, gives a
considerable boost to our bodily metabolism and eventually promotes weight
loss.

Enzyme Supplements for Weight Loss
Papaya enzymes are also available in the form of green papaya tablets or
chewable capsules. Being a good alternative to raw papaya fruit, these dietary
supplements have become very popular these days. If you can’t avail fresh
papaya, take these supplements along with high-protein meals. They comprise
both protein and lipid digesting enzymes, which facilitates the digestion to a
great extent. In other words, papaya enzyme supplements can dissolve the
proteins encasing the fatty deposits, thereby burning up the fat cells and
releasing energy. The whole procedure can help us get rid of unwanted fat.
Papaya weight loss diet:
Breakfast – Pick up papayas from the store which are not
overly ripe. Start the diet from the first meal of the day.
Preferably, you must drink a glass of oatmeal water or soy during these
two days, sprinkled with 2 teaspoons of grains like wheat germ so you have
sufficient fiber intake. Following this, eat a generous serving of papaya
salad. Select a medium sized fruit, peel it, and chop it down into cubes,
squeeze a little lemon and that is how you start a healthy day.
Lunch – For lunch, go for a whole grain salad. You
may prepare it with vegetable broth, and then add some diced tomatoes, some
spinach leaves, a few olives, cloves of garlic and half a lemon juice.
Finish the meal with papaya juice. On the second day of your diet, bake
an eggplant and eat it with a small spinach salad. Dress it with olive oil and
a few chops of beets. Again, complete the meal with papaya juice.
Snack – For that evening time snack, cut half a papaya,
some pineapple pieces, a lemon and some honey. Blend the washed and chopped
fruits into a blender and juice them out. Squeeze the lemon, and add some
honey.
Dinner – For dinner on the first day of diet, take one
bowl of veg broth. For taste you may add onion celery and lemon juice.
Sorry, your desert is limited to a diced papaya. On the second day of diet make
some artichokes. Cook them properly and sprinkle a little vinegar and salt.
Eat it with a toast of whole grain bread. Again, let the desert be
limited to cubed papayas.
